Why it is drawn this way

UPI cannot pay a phone number, and this screen is what that fact looks like. See upi-cannot-pay-a-number.

The two honest options are: ask for one, or record a payment made elsewhere. Nothing here pretends otherwise, and no field collects bank credentials Aakalan could not use.

The field under the ask is load-bearing, not decoration. /users/{uid} is readable by its owner alone, so a friend's UPI ID never arrives in a snapshot — without somewhere to write the answer down, the screen asks a question it cannot record the answer to and says "no UPI ID" forever.

The same screen serves a non-INR balance, with different copy: the intent carries cu=INR and Indian PSPs will not route anything else, so settling happens however it actually happened and is recorded here.

Saved on this phone only, and it says so — the note is about somebody else's handle, not the user's own account.
