Why it is drawn this way

The king's square glows red, and nothing else on the board is ever red. See reserved-colour.

The words say what to do. "Check — your king is attacked" sits above the board. The current app shows a small orange "Check!" with a warning emoji.

No modal. Check is a condition of the board, not an interruption. The player has to see the board to answer it.

The drawn position is real. The bishop took on h2 with check. The queen on c7 guards it, so the king cannot take back and must step aside.
