CONCEPT.RESERVED-COLOUR

Summary

Four colours carry the game and may be used for nothing else: the two squares and the two sides.

Why it matters

A player reads a board by its squares and its pieces alone. If the dark-square green is also a button, or the piece ivory is also a card, the board becomes one object among several and a diagonal takes longer to find.

Implications

  • square-light and square-dark paint board squares only. Brand green is a different, deeper green on purpose.
  • side-white and side-black belong to the piece artwork, the side tiles in setup, and nothing else. "White" and "Black" are the names of the sides in the rules, not hues.
  • Brass (move-last, move-selected) marks the last move and the piece in hand. The running clock is the same brass: it is the other thing that says whose move it is.
  • Red on the board means check, and only check. danger is used off the board for Resign.
  • Highlights are a layer over the square, so they hold on all three board colours.
  • A capture is a ring and a quiet move is a dot. Shape, not colour.
