DECISION.2026-06-10.ACCOUNT-DELETION-MESSAGING

Account-deletion canonical messaging: "24h cancel window + permanent wipe within 30 days"

Decision

The canonical user-facing message for account deletion is: "24h to cancel; permanent wipe within 30 days." Backend grace period stays at 24h.

Why

UI copy drift across 3 web surfaces + 2 mobile strings claimed either "7 days" or "30 days" for wipe completion, while backend GRACE_MS is 24h. Real architecture: 24h cancellable window, then irrevocable scheduling, then permanent wipe by dailyAccountDeletionProcessor. DPDP §12 spirit favours making BOTH the cancellable window and the wipe-completion SLA visible. Single canonical message: "24h to cancel; permanent wipe within 30 days."

Impact

  • DataManagementDeletionSection.tsx (2 strings), PrivacyQuickDeleteCard.tsx (1 string), apps/mobile/src/i18n/locales/en.json settings.privacy.delete.subtitle + scheduledBody all rewritten to the canonical phrasing.
  • ConsentForm.tsx already said "wipe within 30 days" — kept as-is.
  • Backend GRACE_MS unchanged (still 24h).
  • Affects copy-strings.

Status

Superseded by 2026-08-01-account-deletion-grace-period-7-days — the 24h grace window this decision canonicalized was itself wrong; grace is now 7 days.
