Why it is drawn this way

It needs the ABSOLUTE net of every member, not your own balances: routing a group's payments turns on Arjun owing Meera, which never appears in what is between you and each of them. simplifyDebts() had been implemented and tested in src/lib/balances.ts the whole time with nothing able to reach it.

Nobody's total changes — only who pays whom, and the line underneath says exactly that. A list of transfers that does not include you is otherwise alarming to read.

The saving is stated as a number ("1 fewer payment") or not at all. "Already the fewest payments possible" is the honest answer when it is, rather than a claim the arithmetic does not support.
