CONCEPT.CONFIDENCE

Summary

Every number this app shows carries a mark saying how it was arrived at, and no number is ever shown without one.

Why it matters

The camera can read a bread roll. It cannot read the butter under it. An app that renders both as one confident figure is a guess with a font, and the loudest credibility complaint about the category leader is exactly that — the same meal returning different numbers with the same certainty each time.

Stating the confidence is what earns the follow-up question. A user who can see that three rows are established and one is unknown reads the-ask as reasonable rather than as nagging.

Implications

  • Three levels and no more: high the camera established it, med a reasonable inference, low the camera physically cannot know.
  • The three tints are reserved. They may not be borrowed for status, emphasis, or anything else — see the PALETTE banner in .context/designs/mobile/shared.css.
  • Label is a stronger claim than Seen and is available only on the barcode path, where the numbers come off the packet rather than out of a model.
  • On warm paper the three are deepened and worded seen · asked · unknown; the concept is the same one, the values differ by scope.
