DECISION.2026-07-27.COUPLES-FIRST-WEDGEDecision — Couples-first wedge
Decision
Pattaya is built couples-first, not mom-only. Every partner action is symmetric; solo mode is a degraded state.
Why
Every incumbent in the parenting-app vertical (Flo, What to Expect, BabyCenter, Ovia, Peanut, iMumz, MyloFamily, BabyChakra) is mom-only. Partners are absent or a token bolted-on view. But:
- The decision to have a kid, the emotional labour of trying, the postpartum load — all shared between two humans in practice.
- Couples-first fixes the CAC problem structurally: two users per install, one paid seat, partner is the retention hook.
- The founders' own persona (persona-undecided-couple) is a couple — this is a product built for themselves and their friend group first.
- Every other wedge we considered (pre-decision-only quiz, Indian-cultural pure play, AI life-coach without partner) loses to a well-executed couples-first + AI + India-cultural depth combination.
Impact
- couples-first concept created
- household-as-billing-unit concept created
- data-model uses Household as top-level entity
- flow-pair-partner is the wedge-defining flow
- surface-mobile-home-shared is the default; surface-mobile-home-solo is a degraded fallback
- Marketing copy is always "for the two of you," never "for moms"
Status
Active.
