Purpose
What AskCal is for, who it is for, and what it is not. From the repo's own pages.
What it is
A calorie counter for photos of food. The user photographs a plate, answers one question if the app asks, and can fix any amount by typing it. It answers PROB-0001: camera apps turn a photo into one confident number, which is wrong on mixed, sauced, oil-cooked and shared food. AskCal asks only when the answer would change the number (one-question) and marks every estimate with ≈ (confidence).
Who it is for
People who count calories for home cooking, mixed dishes and shared plates, and do not want to weigh food (marketing context). It is a global app, never branded to one country (global-app).
What it is not
- Not a health app: calories and macros only, no allergies, no health scores (nutrition-scope).
- Not a cloud photo store: meal photos stay on the device (local-photos).
- Not unlimited for free: photo scans are metered; barcode and search are not (metering).
- Not sold as "AI" in the app's words (no-ai-words).
Status
Live on Google Play (1.4.4). Nothing has shipped to the App Store yet; 1.4.4 was waiting for review on 2026-10-31 (release.yml). Whether the asking beats guessing is not proved yet (PROB-0001 is still open). Words used here: glossary.
