CONCEPT.RETENTION-PAST-BIRTHRetention past birth
Summary
The pregnancy window is ~9 months; CAC recovery fails unless the app owns the postpartum + parenting stages after delivery.
Why it matters
This is the structural killer of pregnancy-only apps. If we spend ₹150 to acquire a couple in week 8 of pregnancy, we have ~7 months to recoup — barely enough for a ₹2,499/yr sub even at 100% renewal.
But if the same user stays through postpartum (12 weeks) + first year of parenting + on into toddler years, we're looking at multi-year LTV. Flo's ~7% free-to-paid conversion combined with cross-stage retention is what makes them a unicorn.
This is why we build the full lifecycle: not because "more features = better" but because the retention math only works with cross-stage.
Implications
- stage-pregnancy to stage-postpartum transition must be seamless — no re-onboarding, no separate app.
- The pillar-journal carries longitudinal value — a mother rereading her first-trimester entries at 6 months postpartum is a real emotional hook and a real retention driver.
- Milestones (surface-mobile-motivation-milestones) span stages — "first heartbeat" through "first steps."
- Postpartum is the highest-monetization moment — mental-health support, sleep coaching, parent-parent coordination. Paywall messaging in postpartum should be strongest.
- We do NOT cut features to ship faster if they break cross-stage — e.g. we ship a light pillar-tracking in stage-parenting even in MVP, because dropping tracking = losing users to Huckleberry / Nara Baby.
- stage-parenting extends to at least 3 years — beyond that, we consider a separate "Kids" product (Phase 5+).
- Long-time users unlock artifacts — printable pregnancy book, first-year yearbook — retention loot that costs us nothing.
