DECISION.2026-10-21.SETTINGS-PLACEMENT

Where settings, the account and the theme live

Asked for and approved by the owner on 2026-10-21; drawn and built the same day.

Context and problem

Settings, the account and the theme were in the wrong places:

  • Company settings sat in the person's own menu, labelled only "Settings", next to Account. It read as the product's settings, or one's own.
  • A product had no settings of its own. Its name and address could not be changed, its roles were set only at capture, and who could open it was one row in a company-wide table.
  • The light / dark switch was a section near the bottom of the Account page, two clicks and a scroll from any canvas.
  • Sign out was a button beside Save on the Account page.

Decision

Each control sits with the thing it changes, one place each:

Scope Opened from Holds
The company the company menu — the Chitragupt crumb in the bar All products · Company settings
The product Product settings in the account menu, shown only inside a product. Its own route inside the product: /<company>/<product>/settings product-settings: name, address, roles, who can open it, Delete
The person the account menu — the avatar, far right of the bar name and email · Account settings · Product settings (inside a product) · Theme Light · Dark · Sign out
  • Product settings live inside the product, in the product's shell (bar and rail), not in Settings. Company and account settings share one Settings shell: Chitragupt (Users, Billing) and You (Account). Neither lists products.
  • The theme is in the account menu only. The Account page no longer has an Appearance section. It is still kept on User.appearance.
  • Sign out is in the account menu only.
  • Settings › Products is gone. Who can open a product is on that product's own settings page; the old table said it a second time.

Consequences

  • The app's AccountMenu holds Account settings, Product settings (given only by the product's bar), the theme switch and Sign out; the company name is CompanyMenu; [client]/settings/products/page.tsx is gone and [client]/[product]/(editor)/(product)/settings/page.tsx is the product's settings.
  • settings is a reserved branch name (Ref_name_not_reserved, RESERVED_BRANCH_NAMES), since the route sits where a ref would.
  • Deleting a product deletes its rows; its captured files stay in storage until a clean-up removes them.
  • Renaming a product and changing where it is captured from need Can edit; deleting it and choosing who can open it are the owner's. Roles keep the Capture step's rules; a new role is captured the next time the product is captured.
  • The delete confirm is not drawn; it takes two presses, as Delete account does.
